Serial killer David Berkowitz in the back of a police care, having been apprehended by police following a year long murder spree where he shot 15 people, killing 6 of them. These killings became known as the ‘Son of Sam’ murders.

Berkowitz was caught thanks to a witness who spotted him near the scene of his final crime. Initially he was sought as a witness, but when police found found a rifle and ammunition in clear view on the back seat of his car, it prompted a search of the vehicle. During the search they found a threatening letter that was addressed to one of the inspectors on the Omega Task Force, a special unit set up to investigate the Son of Sam serial murders. The police approached Berkowitz on his return to the vehicle and he allegedly smiled when they drew their guns on him. There are a number of different versions of what was said during the arrest, but one common account claims that Berkowitz responded to the police officers by asking:

‘Well, you got me. How come it took you such a long time?’

Berkowitz confessed to the murders, with his initial interrogation only lasting 30 minutes. During his confession he reported numerous delusional beliefs, including that he was instructed to commit the murders by a demonically possessed black labrador. He would later recant these statements and state that they had always been a hoax.
